page 39

I think this will be the last page for a while. I’ve actually got over a hundred pages plotted out like this but they don’t seem to be catching on.

I can think of a couple of reasons why. First, I probably need to be more progressive in my promotion of this work. Just doing it isn’t enough. I need to tell people about it and make them aware that it exists. Like the artist cliché I hate talking about myself (but I’m doing an auto-bio manga and blogging about it so on some levels this isn’t true). Actually, when I’m really honest with myself I have to admit I don’t have confidence in the work yet. This brings me to the second reason why I think this work might not be catching on.

The second reason is I’m taking too many short cuts with the art. I’ve taken some criticism for duplicating panels and using the font Comics-sans MS on some message boards. I thought this would save me time (and it has), but I feel it’s also made it easy for people to dismiss this work all together.

I need to address these issues and get this work up to a more “professional level” before I start showing pages again. At that time I will hopefully have the confidence to more aggressively promote myself and this work. We’ll see what happens.

Hey Sam, I haven't been checking in on this blog too regularly of late, but I've been jazzed each time I see a new page. It's really good stuff. I ran into similar issues when I put the Legend of the Elementals online. No rabid fans are showing up, so what's the point of putting it online, especially since plagiarism could be an issue. Checking my page views was counter-productive to my motivation... so I cut myself off. The point, of course--I say this in part to remind myself--is to write/draw for yourself first, since there's no guarantee of making it big. And, as a supporting detail, you've got a certified fan here. Not exactly rabid, but let's just say, again, that if there's a job doing illustrations for my novel, you're at the top of my list.

Kyle,

Thanks for the comment. You hit the nail on the head with the "checking my page views was counter-productive to my motivation" comment.
And your advice about write/drawing for yourself first is also spot on.

I'm glad I put up what I have so far, and the encouragement from my friends has been amazing.
I just need to take a step back for a bit and figure out a way to get this thing to the next level.

It's nice to know you're still alive and kicking. If I ever get over to Korea I'll be sure to look you up.
